It’s all too easy in our hectic lives to forget the importance of taking time out for ourselves. So much of modern health advice concentrates on the importance of exercise and movement, but the power of rest and recuperation should never be under-estimated. Rest and relaxation are crucial for both mental and physical well-being. It allows our bodies and minds to repair, recharge and rejuvenate. Resting can improve energy levels, our mood, our cognitive ability. Resting calms our nervous systems, reducing stress and anxiety. Rest is essential for muscle recovery. Rest allows our immune system the time to fight off infections and to convalesce properly. When I say ‘rest’, I mean proper time out from our daily activities. Sitting quietly, walking in nature, meditating, taking a nap or a bath, time away from our screens and, if need be, time away from other people. In essence, rest is not simply a passive activity, it is an active process of recovery and rejuvenation which is vital for our health and well-being. So next time you consider having a ‘duvet day’ please do so without guilt or apology. It might just be the best thing for you!
